Dear Mr Schlee:
I need urgently two sets of the Pierrot
lunaire, parts and score. One for Mr Kurt Frederick1
who performed2 my Survivor from Warsaw, in Albuquerque
and wants to perform now Pierrot Lunaire and the other
for a performance in Chicago.

The Associated Music Publishers have not one copy
of this piece which they can loan for more than a
few days. Besides, my own set is incomplete as some-
one has failed to return the clarinet part. I don’t know
who. And I would like to have this set completed, will
you send me also, besides these two copies, one clarinet
part. I hope you can fulfill this at once and I want
you to see to it that Mr Leibowitz receives the parts
as fast as possible, because he writes me3 he wants already
to start slowly to study with his performers the piece
for his performance.

Emigration (unter seinem ursprünglichen Namen Fuchsgelb) mehrfach
aufgeführt hatte, bekundete sein Interesse an einer Aufführung bereits
1947 (Kurt Frederick an Arnold Schönberg,
30. Mai 1947; ASCC
10686). Infolge der Kriegsumstände und missverständlicher
Kommunikation gestaltete sich die Materialbeschaffung kompliziert. 1950 wurde der Plan einer Aufführung wegen
Fehlens eines geeigneten Cellisten verworfen (Kurt Frederick an Arnold
Schönberg, 2. März 1950; ASCC

25. Juni 1949, Paris, Salle de la Geographie äußerte René
Leibowitz den Eindruck, dass ihm die UE nur widerwillig das Aufführungsmaterial zur Verfügung
stellen wolle. Er vermutete den Grund darin, dass Schlee
Leibowitz' Aufführung in Konkurrenz
zum Pierrot lunaire Ensemble mit seiner Ehefrau Annemarie Hegner betrachte und bat
Schönberg, selbst an die
UE zu schreiben (René Leibowitz
